Visit
Trains, parking, bikes, walking and the shuttle that does not exist yet. The station table and the walking distances live on the trail page.
Come by train. Cold Spring station is 0.2 miles from Dockside Park; Beacon station is 0.1 miles from Long Dock Park. Breakneck Ridge station is closed.
The Metro-North Hudson Line runs through the corridor. Step-free boarding and the walking distance from each station are on the trail page: Getting here.
HHFT does not operate Metro-North. Timetables, fares and station parking belong to the MTA. Conditions shows live departures with the time we read them.
Warning
Breakneck Ridge station is closed
Closed 21 April 2025 and being rebuilt as part of the Breakneck Connector and Bridge. No trains stop there.
It has no rows at all in Metro-North's published timetable data, so most trip planners will not tell you it is shut — they will simply show you nothing. Use Cold Spring for the south end and Beacon for the north.
The rebuild is currently recorded for 2027. That date comes from a road-and-transit event system, not from a Metro-North commitment.
The corridor runs along NYS Route 9D. There is no Fjord Trail parking yet — every lot below is drawn, not built.
| Lot | Planned | Status |
|---|---|---|
| The Notch | 80 new spaces | Planned. Location indicative. |
| Wade's Hill | 90 new spaces | Planned. Location indicative. |
| Washburn | 48 spaces expanded to about 96 | Planned expansion of an existing state-park lot. |
| Long Dock Park | No new parking | Existing park lot only. |
| Dockside Park | None | This entrance is intended to serve people arriving by train. |
A fee is expected, in line with comparable New York State parks. The fee is not set, and whether the Empire Pass will be accepted is undecided. Metro-North's lots at Beacon and Cold Spring belong to the MTA and the municipalities: paid on weekdays, free at weekends and holidays.
Take care
Do not park on the shoulder of Route 9D
On a fine Saturday cars line the shoulder for hundreds of yards near the Breakneck trailhead and people walk between them in the traffic lane. That pressure is the reason this project exists.
Restrictions on 9D are set by NYSDOT and the towns, not by HHFT. Check the posted signs — they change.
The main trail is designed as a shared path 10 to 14 feet wide, for people on foot and on bikes together, with grades mostly at or under 5%. The narrower meanders are planned pedestrian-only.
Today there is no separated cycle route between the two villages. The only continuous link is Route 9D, a state highway with a narrow shoulder. Rules for bicycles on the state-park trails are New York State Parks', not ours.
Cold Spring station to Dockside Park is a few minutes on foot, and Beacon station to Long Dock Park about the same. Walking between the two villages means the shoulder of Route 9D for a long stretch. It is legal and people do it. It is also the experience this trail is being built to replace.
Warning
There is no Fjord Trail shuttle
Not a reduced one, not a seasonal one — none. No operator, no vehicles, no route, no timetable and no real-time feed.
The published plans describe an accessible shuttle beginning with the Dutchess Manor project and expanding as sections open. Nine potential stops appear in the environmental review as a list of place names. They are not a route and they are not a service.
Coverage through the Highlands is patchy and we have no coverage map we trust enough to publish. Expect to lose signal under the ridge and in the cuttings along the rail line. Save the offline pack before you set off — the map, the trail data and the access numbers all work without a network.
